Overview
Dear Diary is a personal journaling app built around a simple principle: your memories are yours. This policy explains what information the app handles, where it is stored, and the control you have over it.
Information You Provide
- Journal content. The entries you write — including titles, text, mood ratings, tags, and timestamps.
- Photos and voice notes. Any images or audio recordings you choose to attach to an entry.
- Account details (optional). If you create an account to sync across devices, we process your name, email address, and a password to authenticate you.
Where Your Data Is Stored
By default, everything you create is stored locally on your device. Your journal text is kept in an on-device database, and your photos and voice notes are saved in the app's private storage on your device.
If you enable cloud sync by creating an account, the text of your journal entries (title, content, mood, and tags) is securely transmitted to and stored with our cloud provider so it can be backed up and synced across your devices. Your photos, voice notes, biometric data, and app passcode never leave your device and are not uploaded to the cloud.
Device Permissions
- Photos & Camera. Used only when you choose to attach or capture an image for an entry.
- Microphone. Used only when you choose to record a voice note.
- Notifications. If you enable daily reminders, they are scheduled locally on your device. We do not send push notifications from a server and do not collect a push token.
- Face ID / Touch ID. Optional app lock is handled entirely by your device's operating system. We never receive or store your biometric data.
How We Use Information
Information is used solely to provide the app's functionality: saving and displaying your entries, generating on-device insights and reflections, syncing your entries across your devices, and securing your account. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Service Providers
When cloud sync is enabled, we use Supabase as our authentication and database provider to store your account and synced entry text on our behalf. They process this data only to provide the service and are bound by their own security and privacy commitments.
Selling Your Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone.
Data Retention & Your Choices
- You can edit or delete any individual entry at any time.
- You can delete all of your entries from Settings.
- You can permanently delete your account and all associated data, including any cloud backups, from Settings › Account › Delete Account.
- Uninstalling the app removes all data stored locally on that device.
Security
Account credentials and session tokens are stored using your device's secure storage. Data synced to the cloud is transmitted over encrypted connections. While no method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Children's Privacy
Dear Diary is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide notice within the app.
